    Hi there,
I just want to tell you that I love your approach to anxiety and panic!
I too have overcome panic attacks and though I struggles with them for a long time, I believe that now they are just something I can accept and relate to when others mention them.
I used your “Tony the Tiger” video link on youtube as part of a presentation for my psych class, and I think, funny enough, that my instructor will get the most out of seeing it, because though she never said so, I believe she suffers with panic herself. There was an all too interested and hopeful feel to her when I began to share that I’d overcome them…
I didn’t use your exact technique, but something as simple…someone close to me that was dealing with me during my last bad period with panic, told me that they had seen someone on television talking about panic attacks and that to stop them you could simply just tell yourself that the flooding of thoughts…”it’s probably a blood cot” “Maybe it’s a tumor” “what if this headache is really an aneurysm ready to burst?” … smile…you know the ones…to just tell yourself, these aren’t valid thoughts…and when that person told me that,I thought…”You’ve got to be kidding, how could I ever be rational when panic starts?” But it worked..and fast…and even though I then dealt with waking up in a panic state for a short while, even with those episodes, they began to decrease and finally went away completely. I would never have believed that the strategy would be so simple.
I can remember when I was 16 is when I had my first one ( I am 37 now and panic free for about 1 year…though there were years in between when it seemed the panic had passed, it always returned) I too sought a counselor for help, and she was very unfamiliar with what I was going through. I remember at one point asking her what she thought would happen if I just didn’t fight tomake it stop but just let it go on…and she looked frightened and said “I just don’t know…”
That kept me fighting and quite likely extended the lifelong battle..
Your videos are excellent and I share you with anyone who mentions to me now , that they have anxiety and panic issues…in hopes that they can embrace the simplicity and also become panic free 🙂
Thanks for your enthusiastic and fun approach to such a serious and debilitating disorder!
    Merry Christmas
    Patty

I also had panic attacks at several periods of my life. The last time therapy helped me to understand that I was pointing my anxiety at a false problem (my statistics course) and not looking at the real source of my anxiety (how my life would change if i passed my statistics course and really could study psychology and change my job! When I got my concern pointed at the real problem, I was able to re-orient my thinking.
I also discovered more or less by accident that there was a top, or crest to the panic and that once it was passed I would go back to normal. It was at that point that I stopped panicking about panic. When I had a panic attack with my statistics text-book, I just let it crest and then said… “OK, back to the beginning of the chapter”. When I stopped worrying about my anxiety and just treated it like a reasonable reaction to a new and challenging situation, it started to go away.
Having the proper name for the experience is very important…then you do not have to worry about “brain aneurisms or blood clots”.
There is a huge need for education in the world about panic attacks and how to deal with them before they get out of hand. Too bad that it does not become part of the elementary school health education program.
I applaude you Geert , for your charming as well as compassionate and up-beat contribution to the public education on the subject. Would you ever consider making a series of videos aimed at children?
I wish you a very merry Christmas and continuing success in the New Year!
    Susan

what has taken me 25 years to try and overcome, your methods have “cured” me in less than 2 months!!! like yourself,my panic attacks started when i was quite young.but i never realized this until reading some of your e-mails concerning your own condition.my secret to stopping an attack is quite simple.i put the problem, whatevr that may be in a “picture frame” focus on the image bringing it closer all the while.then i simply toss it over my head and out of sight.sounds completely crazy, but it works for me.i suppose since a panic attack is not rational, the treatment doesnt have to be either.to anyone that may read this, anti depressant drugs will probably not help.these simply dull your senses.your panic attacks are lessened, but never really go away.not to mention what these drugs may do to your health over time.just go somewhere quiet, meditate and your answer will come.remember keep an open mind.many thanks to you,and everyone out there.HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY,AND A PANIC FREE NEW YEAR!!!! Hello Geert,
    Merry Christmas to you.
Thank you for your video’s. You are helping many people and should never stop. You maybe helping more people than you realize.
You have helped me turn the switch. I am in the corporate world and often have to give presentations to numbers of people in conference rooms. Used to drive me nuts with anxiety. Now I know that its OK. I accept the terrible thoughts and they go away. Acceptance is the key for me and knowing it is all OK.

Geert.. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I am still not there yet only 2 weeks into your program, I have a very long road ahead of me to go but I am trying and following your instructions. YOU are my best Christmas Present ever. And no, no book because your videos along with your sessions help us/me connect because words on paper are not that helpful but listening to you and watching you are the BEST GIFT, some days I just watch one of your videos and it is so impactful, I could read your words but it wouldn’t set in as much. Question: Where did you find “Tony the Tiger” I want to buy one or 2 of them so when I drive I want him to be my passenger, I will buckle him up to keep him safe but he may be a nice companion to have as one of my tools to make me realize how ridicoulous my thoughts are.
MERRY, MERRY Christmas to you. You are so GREAAAT and I love your program and listening and watching you. Thank you. Looking forward to next year to be a NEW year for me 🙂 All my best to you 🙂
    Luv Diana

A very Merry Christmas to you, Geert, and all your readers. May 2010 prove to be an anxiety-free year for us all!

By the way, I finally cut out the caffeine (well, almost – I just drink de-caf now) and don’t get anywhere near as stressed out. This isn’t easy when I live in the home of Starbucks!

Although I have no wish for others to suffer Its comforting to know one isn’t alone or an oddity. Happy New Year. Although I don’t have panic attacks I counsel many people that do. I’ve given your email address to several of them. I enjoy your videos myself and will keep watching and referring. I’m sure it is very reassuring for people who have struggled with anxiety to see and hear someone that has successfully dealt with the problem.
